Wooden Canoe Restoration and Building

Experience the Art of Canoe Crafting and Restoration

Escape to the peaceful rolling hills of Bethany for a unique and rejuvenating weekend retreat where you’ll enjoy an afternoon of traditional wooden canoe restoration and building. This retreat offers an exclusive opportunity to connect with the heritage of canoe craftsmanship and the natural beauty of the Kawartha Lakes region while having time to just unwind or enjoy other activities offered at Sky Haven.

You will enjoy spacious, luxury accommodations designed to provide tranquillity and relaxation. We will provide you with some wholesome breakfast, lunch, and snack options. We feature fresh, locally sourced ingredients to nourish your body and soul.
Alternatively, you can bring your own food and use our well-equipped full kitchens.

Your experienced instructor is the well-known Dick Persson, the founder of the renowned Buckhorn Canoe Company. Dick will take you on a journey through the history of Kawartha Lakes and Peterborough canoe building, sharing the rich heritage of this craft. Dick will assess your canoe or another sample canoe and share his extensive knowledge of its condition, origin, age, and history, and provide insights into what it would take to restore it to its original splendour.

There will be hands-on instruction in various aspects of classic canoe restoration, for example, planking, steam bending, ribbing, stem repair, and more. During the retreat, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with other participants and engage in group discussions and questions with Dick Persson. This shared experience enhances your understanding of canoe craftsmanship and allows you to make new friends who share your passion.

As a break from the workshop, enjoy a scenic hiking trail with magnificent views of Bethany’s rolling hills or a horse experience or archery tag game. These options offer physical and mental refreshment and a chance to soak in the serene beauty of the surrounding landscape.
